The New Status Symbol Is a Phone That Opens Wider Than Your Worldview

Apple announced the foldable iPhone Duo on September 9, with preorders scheduled for October 16 and availability for October 23. Expanding the display is an engineering problem. What the owner intends to put on it remains a question for the owner.

Dominic Saye has been putting himself on the Ellipsis Open for four days. We met for lunch so that he could demonstrate how much had changed. First he moved my water glass. Then he opened the phone into the space where it had been.

The hinge is excellent. There is a small resistance, followed by the luxurious surrender familiar from the door of a well-insulated car. Dominic performed the action three times before explaining what the device was for. On the fourth opening he stopped talking so I could hear it.

He has chosen a color called Unfinished Titanium, which required an extra finishing process.

On the left side of the display was a review of a restaurant Dominic had already decided was overrated. On the right was its menu. He enlarged the prices, returned to the review and enlarged a sentence about the prices. The two sources occupied equal areas, giving his position the appearance of having been arrived at from opposite directions.

On his old phone, he explained, he would have had to switch between them.

This is a substantial improvement for anyone whose research consists of assembling the reasons for something they have already said at dinner. The supporting material can remain visible throughout. Dominic no longer needs to hold a doubt in his head while another application loads.

The transition between screens is particularly well handled. An assumption formed on the smaller display expands without interruption when the phone is unfolded. Every familiar detail is preserved. During our test, an opinion Dominic had held since 2018 occupied the full width without showing any additional information.

He had given considerable thought to the layout. News was in the library wing. Shopping occupied a bright space near the entrance, where it could be mistaken for browsing. Messages from friends were admitted to a salon. A friend who kept sending long articles had been moved to an outbuilding, with notifications disabled so that he could concentrate.

Dominic showed me a shortcut connecting a headline directly to the group chat. There was no need to pass through the article itself. The time saved could be spent explaining that people ought to read more widely.

To assess the device's handling of a different perspective, I asked him to open a second review. This one called the restaurant overhyped. The first had called it overrated. Dominic rotated the screen toward me and left it there until I acknowledged the comparison.

The waiter came to describe the specials. Dominic asked whether they were available to view online. They were on a board behind his shoulder. He used the camera to look at the board, then magnified a dish until it was possible to object to the price without seeing what came with it.

An optional panoramic mode provides further room for agreement. Seventeen accounts can affirm the same conclusion across a continuous horizontal field. The perspective is adjustable: a user may look slightly down on the accounts, or down on them from a considerable height. Dominic preferred the second setting but appreciated having the choice.

There was one unexpected result in our testing. An article arrived from the outbuilding friend containing information Dominic had not previously encountered. It was concise, relevant and properly displayed. For a few seconds it remained in the center of the screen without any obvious place to go.

Dominic examined it closely. He said he would want to know more about the context.

The context was provided.

He said it was a lot to get into over lunch.

The phone allocated the article a temporary space beside the hinge. By the time the plates were cleared, that space had become a cloakroom. The article was still there, beneath something Dominic might buy for winter.

As the interior grew, so did the need to manage access. Dominic installed a small vestibule. New information could state its purpose there before being brought through to him. Familiar opinions came straight in, even when they had changed their names. One had been entering regularly for years under the name of common sense.

The last accessory he showed me was a tiny velvet rope stretched across the vestibule. It was beautifully made. The pile caught the light from the display, and the brass fittings had enough weight to suggest that whatever lay beyond them deserved protection.

Dominic folded the phone and offered to send me a link. I said I would think about it. He reopened it so I could appreciate how easily I might do that.

The rope is sold separately, in colors matched to the case. It comes with two small hooks. Both go on the inside.
