Your Sleep Score Is Becoming Your Most Important Reference

Cora has added a field to her dinner invitations. Guests may leave it blank. She stresses that there is no pressure to come.

Your Sleep Score Is Becoming Your Most Important Reference

Oura's Sleep Score summarizes a night's sleep on a scale from 0 to 100. In the dining circle of Cora Elwin, a similar number has begun to settle questions previously left to character.

The change is visible on her invitations. Below the request for dietary requirements, there is now a space for a screenshot. Guests may decline to provide one. Cora stresses this whenever she sends the link, usually adding that there is no pressure to come.

“You want to know who's arriving,” she said, laying out eight linen napkins and removing two.

Her friend Leonie had scored 68 that morning. Cora suggested they try another weekend. Leonie said she felt perfectly capable of dinner. Cora sent a heart and said that was exactly the sort of decision she shouldn't have to make today.

The practice began after an evening Cora remembers as needlessly difficult. A guest asked whether she had returned a borrowed casserole dish. Cora felt put on the spot. Later, she discovered that the guest had slept poorly, which put the whole incident in perspective.

The dish is still in Cora's kitchen. She intends to give it back when they can both approach the subject constructively.

On the Saturday I visited, the place cards had been arranged to put a 93 beside a 91. An 82 was next to the bread. Cora had intended to sit him near the window, but the woman opposite had brought a complicated personal update and would need someone with the capacity to receive it.

One man arrived forty minutes late and immediately explained a business idea. He spoke until the first course was cold. His score was 96. Cora described his intensity as a gift, though one that required a certain generosity from the table.

When an 81 asked to finish a sentence, she quietly brought him water.

No one in the group claims a number can tell you everything about a person. They consider it a starting point. Starting elsewhere would mean remembering how people behaved across years, sometimes under circumstances about which very little data had been collected.

Cora's partner, Ben, favors that older method. He remembers that Leonie once drove across town with a spare key, and that the man with the business idea has failed to pay him back for a train ticket. He has no device that can display either event.

“Ben has a very narrative approach,” Cora said.

Ben is unmeasured. Friends are fond of him, but there is no responsible way to say how fond. When he says he is happy, Cora accepts it provisionally. When he says he is upset, she asks whether now is a good time to be making a claim of that size.

Recently, he suggested counseling. Cora agreed. On the morning of the appointment, a work call ran over, so she sent her ring ahead in a taxi.

The counselor placed it on a cushion opposite Ben. He described how lonely he had felt sitting beside Cora while she checked whether they were both having the right kind of evening. The ring remained still.

The counselor asked Ben how it felt to be heard without interruption.

At the next appointment, Ben raised the absence of his partner. The counselor observed that the ring had now attended twice. Cora had sent an email containing the phrase “fully committed,” but it had arrived late and without an attachment.

After six sessions, the ring was judged ready to continue on its own. It came in its charging case. The counselor admired the way it had created a small space for itself.

Its social life has also improved. Invitations arrive addressed to the ring, with Cora included where numbers allow. Friends find it calming. It never turns an anecdote back toward itself. It has been asked to hold a spare key, an arrangement that requires two hooks but otherwise works well.

Cora says she is delighted that her commitment to wellbeing has brought people together. She does sometimes notice that the group grows quieter when she puts the ring back on.

For an upcoming weekend, the host asked whether the ring could provide a reference for her. Cora found this faintly excessive. She had known the host for fourteen years, helped carry a sofa up three flights of stairs, and been there when the host's first business failed.

She sent the request anyway. There were only six places.

The letter arrived that afternoon. It described Cora as punctual in her bedtime routine and pleasant during brief periods of wear. It recommended her for light conversation. Under “How long have you known the applicant?” the ring had written, “Mostly overnight.”

Factual note: Oura's score and its range are real. The people, screening practices, counseling scenes, and independently social ring are invented and are not Oura features or policies. This is not health advice.
